Barbadosed-1636

Also known as The King’s Bride, this portrait was inspired by the historic events during the 1600’s when African men and women were shipped to Barbados and forced into slavery alongside Irish natives. The proud, defiant expression of this woman portrays her reaction to her situation. The irons shackled around her arms are only apparent when the piece is viewed from the back.
