One of the challenges was to represent the mental state associated with drug addiction; mostly emptiness and lack of stamina. Both the original sculpture of the young mother and the final version are discussed in Faraut’s book Mastering Portraiture: Advanced Analyses of the Face Sculpted in Clay. Music by William Boutwell.

Before the Devil Has Time

Sculpting a Torso

This sculpting demo is an excerpt form the full length DVD Techniques of Sculpture: Torsos in Clay by Philippe Faraut. The process explains how to use two different approaches to modeling male and female torsos in water-based clay. One is the geometric approach for the female and for the male a more anatomical technique showing the origin and insertion for each muscle.

How to Sculpt a Female Torso

This sculpting demo on modeling the female torso in water-based clay follows the techniques demonstrated in Philippe Faraut's book Figure Sculpting Volume 1: Planes & Construction Techniques in Clay. The process explains how to use a geometric approach to build a simplified but solid structure following human anatomy.
