Three-dimensional Art References
One of the biggest struggles for the figurative artists is to find models that are willing to spend hours sitting still. The logical alternative is to use photographs or drawings as reference. Even though a series of good pictures can be invaluable to refine a work when the model is not available, they will show only a fraction of the information necessary to achieve a good sculpture or even a good drawing. Furthermore, photographs need to be taken in a controlled environment in order to provide useful information. The lighting must be set properly to indicate volumes without either flattening the face or creating shadows that are misleading. It is also important to note that the photos must be taken with a 100mm lens to prevent perspective distortion. An example is shown on page 8 of Portrait Sculpting: Anatomy & Expressions in Clay.
PCF Studios, Inc. has created a series of casts made of hard plaster, to give art students the opportunity to study the human face under ideal conditions. Painters, illustrators, forensic artists, and sculptors use them to enhance their three-dimensional perception.

This precisely designed framework of metal arms can be fitted around a sculpture to measure relationships between given points
three-dimensionally. It allows these measurements to be transferred from a model made of clay, wood, plaster, etc. to a block of
wood or stone that can then be carved by machine or hand. This method of duplicating intricate sculpture has been used for centuries.
