Sculpting Seminars Overview

Due to restrictions regarding social distancing and travel we have had to cancel several of our spring seminars. Additionally, we are temporarily suspending registration and balance payments for classes that are pending but will keep everyone updated as the situation progresses. If you are interested in joining any of the sessions later in the year please join the waiting list for that class. We will be notifying everyone once registration reopens. Individuals that have already paid deposits will be contacted directly if changes need to be made to their event.

Individuals will receive one to one sculpting instruction using water-based clay from Mr. Faraut, while still being encouraged to explore their own styles. Live models will be used for the portrait and figure classes.

Students range from beginners to professional artists. All skill levels are welcome due to the nature of Philippe's teaching style. The goal of all of the seminars is to teach sculptors how to improve their techniques and speed. Sculptures from the animal classes are likely to be completed, however, finished pieces are not necessarily the goal of the portrait and figure classes though students are welcome to keep any or all of the projects that they have created. Please note that we do not offering firing services.

All materials are provided for use during the seminar. Class hours for sessions held at Philippe's NY studio are from 9-4:30 daily and enrollment ranges from 16-20 students. Cost for the three-day sculpting seminars is $595. Five-day classes are $950.

A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit will be required for registration. Balance for the seminars will be due 6 weeks prior to the first day of class. A link will be sent at that time to pay online or payment can be mailed. Once balance is paid it is non-refundable.

Due to the limited number of sessions offered we ask that students register for only one session per calendar year.

This class is different from Philippe’s usual portrait class as the student is required to bring a series of photographs of one individual of their choice which they will be using to achieve a likeness in clay. The success of the result depends greatly on the quality of the photos provided. Students are encouraged to, if possible, bring frontal, profile, three quarter, above and bellow images of the subject. We discourage the use of a phone or tablet to take these photos (due to focal distortion) and instead recommend the use of a camera with a at least 55 mm lens.

The first day will be spent reviewing anatomy and construction, the two remaining days sculpting the portrait. Please note that firing services are not available. Prior experience is encouraged for this class.

All materials are provided for use during the seminar. Class hours are from 9-4:30 daily. Enrollment ranges from 14-18 students.
